The Netherlands is since 1985 member of an international consortium on ocean drilling. The present Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) will be replaced in 2013 by the new International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). The NWO Division for Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) pays an annual contribution in order to give researchers the opportunity to conduct drillings into the ocean floor with drilling vessels and make accompanying measurements. The objective of the Netherlands IODP Committe (NIC) is to strenghten the participation of the Netherlands in international research, directed at plate tectonics, palaeoclimate, the evolution of life and deep biosphere. From 2004 onwards, the Dutch participation runs through the European Consortium on Ocean Drilling (ECORD).
(1) NWO/ALW has approved Netherlands membership of IODP for the coming 5 years! (link to IODP-NL White paper). (2) Zee van Kennis, a movie clip summarizing 10 years of IODP activities within the Netherlands has been released at YouTube. (3) Caroline Slomp (UU) has been invited to participate IODP EXP 347 (Baltic Sea). This ECORD-coordinated MSP expedition will take place in the spring/summer of 2013.
