IODP is a multi-platform marine research program involving a riserless drilling vessel (above), a riser drilling vessel, and mission-specific platforms. Three Implementing Organizations (IOs), in Japan, the USA, and Europe, serve as science operators of the various ships and platforms.

Since 1985 the Netherlands is a member of the international Ocean Drilling Programme. The NWO Division for Earth and Life Sciences pays an annual contribution in order to give researchers the opportunity to conduct drillings into the ocean floor with drilling vessels and make accompanying measurements. The objective of the Netherlands IODP Committe (NIC) is to strenghten the participation of the Netherlands in international research, directed at plate tectonics, palaeoclimate, the evolution of life and deep biosphere. From 2004 onwards, the Dutch participation runs through the European Consortium on Ocean Drilling (ECORD).
